How is gout in the ankle treated?

Gout is inflammation caused by urate crystals inside or around a joint. An ankle attack can produce sudden severe pain, swelling, warmth and marked sensitivity, sometimes making footwear or walking difficult. Ankle swelling and joint swelling can have other causes, including injury or infection, so a painful red joint should not be self-diagnosed from appearance alone. During an attack, protect the ankle, elevate it when resting and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods if that feels soothing. Follow the prescribed anti-inflammatory or other gout medicine exactly, because the safest choice depends on kidney function, stomach history, heart health and other medicines. Once the attack is controlled, discuss whether urate-lowering treatment is suitable and how it will be monitored. Regular review matters when attacks recur. Conditions such as chronic kidney disease and obesity may affect risk and medication choices, but do not change the need for an individual plan.

Get urgent medical assessment for a hot, swollen ankle with fever, chills, feeling very unwell, a wound, or rapidly worsening pain. Infection can resemble gout and needs prompt treatment.
