Cupping Therapy on the Stomach: What to Know

During dry cupping, cups create suction on the skin over selected areas of the abdomen. Wet cupping involves small skin punctures and carries additional bleeding and infection concerns. Suction does not reach internal organs, remove toxins, or diagnose the source of pain. Marks can look red, purple, or brown and may be tender for a while.

Avoid placing cups over broken, infected, sunburned, or recently operated skin. Extra caution is needed during pregnancy, particularly over the abdomen, and for people with bleeding disorders or medicines that affect clotting. A practitioner should ask about these factors before treatment.

Explain the exact symptom you hope to address, how long it has been present, and any bowel, urinary, menstrual, or pregnancy-related changes. Ask whether the planned treatment is dry or wet and how hygiene is maintained. Keep the area clean, avoid scratching the marks, and stop if suction causes sharp pain, blistering, faintness, or nausea.
