What should you know about cupping therapy in ayurveda?

Ayurvedic practitioners may use cupping as part of a broader traditional approach to wellbeing. The session may involve suction cups placed on selected areas, with or without oils or massage. Ask exactly whether the service is dry cupping or wet cupping, how long cups remain in place, and what the intended goal is.

Traditional terminology does not remove ordinary medical risks. Suction can leave bruising, soreness, blisters, or skin irritation. Wet cupping also creates open skin and requires sterile, single-use supplies and safe disposal.

Tell both your healthcare professional and practitioner about medicines, pregnancy, allergies, eczema, diabetes, poor wound healing, bleeding problems, or reduced sensation. Check training, infection-control procedures, consent, aftercare, and what happens if symptoms worsen. Avoid cups over broken, infected, numb, or recently injured skin, and do not use it to delay assessment of new pain.

Contact a clinician if treated skin becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, painful, or drains fluid, or if you develop fever. Urgent help is needed for fainting, breathing difficulty, severe bleeding, or sudden weakness. Persistent back symptoms, numbness, or weakness deserve medical assessment rather than repeated traditional treatment alone.
