Short answer

During pregnancy, do not start cupping therapy without advice from your maternity team because technique, body area, bleeding and skin risks require individual assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why pregnancy changes the decision

Cupping uses suction and can cause bruising, soreness, burns or skin infection. Wet cupping creates small skin openings and adds bleeding and infection concerns. Pregnancy-related changes may make comfort, skin response and circulation different, while the safety of a proposed body area depends on the pregnancy and the reason for treatment.

Back or shoulder discomfort is common in pregnancy, but it still deserves a tailored plan. Cupping should not delay assessment of abdominal pain, bleeding, contractions, reduced fetal movement or other maternity symptoms. Tell the practitioner about your pregnancy, gestational stage, medicines and any pregnancy complications.

Before any session

Ask the obstetric or maternity team whether cupping is appropriate, which areas must be avoided and what alternatives may help. If they agree, use a trained practitioner with single-use or properly sterilised equipment, and do not place cups over broken, infected or numb skin. Keep routine prenatal care and prescribed medicines in place.

For muscular discomfort, a maternity-approved movement plan, positioning advice or physiotherapy may be more suitable. Related reading includes Back Muscle Spasm and Upper Back Pain.

When to seek urgent advice

Contact your maternity team for vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, regular tightening, new severe abdominal or pelvic pain, fever, or a noticeable change in fetal movement. After cupping, seek care for spreading redness, pus, worsening pain, persistent bleeding or feeling faint. Trouble breathing or collapse requires emergency help.
