What should you know about cupping on scars?

Short answer
Cupping should not be applied over a fresh or unhealed scar because suction can damage fragile tissue and increase skin irritation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why scars need care
A scar is remodelling tissue, even after the skin surface has closed. Strong suction, heat, or skin breaks from wet cupping can cause bruising, bleeding, blistering, infection, or reopening of tissue. A caesarean scar may also feel numb, tight, tender, or lumpy while healing; these sensations do not show whether cupping is suitable.
There is limited reason to assume cupping will flatten or remove a scar. A postnatal physiotherapist or surgical team can assess movement, pain, adhesions, and wound healing and suggest safer scar-care options when appropriate.
Safer next steps
Wait until the incision is completely closed and your maternity or surgical team confirms that the tissues have healed. Avoid any practitioner who proposes suction over an open wound, scab, infection, or unexplained swelling. Do not use cups over areas with reduced sensation unless a clinician has assessed them, because heat or pressure may be harder to notice.
For a caesarean recovery, follow wound-care instructions and ask about gentle massage, moisturising, mobility, or referral to postnatal physiotherapy. These choices depend on healing and symptoms.
When to seek medical help
Stop and seek advice if cupping causes increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, pus, bleeding, wound separation, fever, or a new rash. Urgent care is appropriate for severe abdominal pain, faintness, or rapidly worsening swelling. After birth, severe headache, vision change, or sudden swelling also needs urgent assessment because it can be linked to pre-eclampsia.
Questions to ask
Has my scar healed enough for any treatment? Could my symptoms indicate infection or a hernia instead? Would physiotherapy or another scar-care method be safer? What should I do if the scar becomes painful, red, or open?

Questions people ask
Can cupping remove a caesarean scar?
Cupping cannot be relied on to remove a scar, and suction may injure healing tissue. Ask a clinician about suitable scar care.
Can cupping be used after birth?
Only discuss it after the wound has healed and your maternity or surgical team has assessed your recovery; it should never be used over an open incision.
