What should you know about cupping for high blood pressure?

Hypertension often has no obvious symptoms while persistently raised pressure strains blood vessels and organs. A session of cupping cannot show your current reading or whether treatment is protecting your heart, brain and kidneys.

Cupping may leave bruising, burns, skin breaks, bleeding, infection or light-headedness. Wet cupping is particularly unsuitable without careful discussion when bleeding risk, anaemia, fragile skin or medicine interactions are concerns. Never stop blood-pressure medicine because a reading temporarily changes after a session.

Have your blood pressure measured with a validated approach and keep follow-up appointments. Take prescribed treatment as directed, and ask before adding cupping or changing medicines. Bring a record of home readings, symptoms and any supplements to your review.

Your clinician may also consider factors linked with blood pressure, such as obesity, obstructive sleep apnoea or chronic kidney disease. Cupping cannot treat these causes or reduce the need for risk assessment. Use clean equipment and avoid damaged or infected skin if you proceed after discussion.

Seek emergency help for sudden weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, new confusion, fainting, severe breathlessness, or severe chest pain. These may signal a stroke, transient ischaemic attack, heart failure or another emergency; do not wait for a cupping session or home remedy.

Arrange prompt review for repeated high readings, new severe headache with visual changes, worsening swelling or breathlessness, or symptoms after changing treatment. A painful, hot, swollen or draining cupping site also needs assessment.
