Cryotherapy for Skin Tags

Skin tags are soft, benign growths that often arise where skin rubs against skin or clothing, such as the neck, underarms, eyelids, or groin. In cryotherapy, a clinician applies cold to the tag and its attachment. The tag may swell, darken, blister, or form a crust before it loosens as the skin repairs itself. The result depends on the tag's size, base, location, and the surrounding skin. A growth that looks like a tag may instead need a different diagnosis, so self-treatment can create injury while leaving the real problem unrecognised.

Tell the clinician if the area has reduced sensation, frequent irritation, previous unusual scarring, or a history of pigment change. Follow the practice's instructions for washing, dressing, and applying any product. Keep clothing from rubbing the site, do not pull off a crust, and wait until the surface has healed before using irritating cosmetics there. Electrosurgery or Skin Tag Removal may be alternatives when the tag has a broad base, is in a delicate location, or needs removal by another method.

Seek an assessment before treatment if a supposed skin tag is hard, newly painful, repeatedly bleeding, rapidly enlarging, unusually pigmented, or firmly attached. After cryotherapy, ask for medical advice if swelling spreads, pain intensifies, pus appears, fever develops, or the wound fails to improve. Eye-area, genital, or otherwise delicate sites deserve particular care because nearby tissue can be easily irritated.

Ask: Is this definitely a skin tag? Is freezing appropriate for its attachment and location? What should I do if a blister forms? How can I limit rubbing and colour change? Would another removal method allow the tissue to be examined?
