What should you know about cryo for skin tags?

A clinician applies a very cold agent to the skin tag and nearby tissue for a controlled period. The treated area may sting, redden, swell, blister, crust, or feel numb before it heals. The final appearance depends on the tag's size, attachment, location, skin type, and how the wound heals.

Do not freeze an unexplained, changing, bleeding, very dark, or irregular growth at home. A skin tag can resemble another lesion, and an assessment may be needed before removal. Freezing can also cause pigment change or a scar, particularly in some skin types.

Tell the clinician about diabetes, reduced sensation, circulation problems, immune conditions, medicines, allergies, and previous raised scars. Follow the wound-care instructions, keep the area clean, and avoid picking a blister or crust. Protect healing skin from friction and sun as advised. Electrosurgery or another removal method may be considered when the attachment or location makes freezing less suitable.

Seek medical advice for spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, severe pain, uncontrolled bleeding, or a wound that is not healing. Arrange review if the growth returns, changes, or was never clearly diagnosed. Urgent help is needed for rapidly developing facial swelling or breathing difficulty after any treatment.

Ask how the lesion was identified, what healing will look like, how to protect the wound, whether a sample is needed, and whether cryotherapy or another removal method is safer for its position.
