What causes croup virus symptoms?

Croup develops when inflammation and swelling occur around the voice box and nearby windpipe. In a young child's smaller airway, even modest swelling can make air movement noisy. This produces a harsh sound when breathing in, called stridor, and can change a normal cough into a barking cough. A child may first have cold-like symptoms before the croup sound becomes clear.

The virus is the trigger, while the swelling creates the breathing symptoms. A fever may be present, but fever does not measure the degree of airway narrowing. Watch the child's breathing when calm, because crying can temporarily make the sound and effort more pronounced.

Keep the child calm and upright, offer fluids if they can swallow normally, and avoid cigarette smoke or strong fragrances. Listen for noisy breathing and look for skin pulling in at the ribs or neck. Do not use leftover antibiotics, because they do not act against the viruses that cause croup. A clinician may recommend medicine that targets airway swelling after assessing the child.

If you cannot tell whether the sound is croup, arrange a child health consultation. Describe when the cough began, whether the noise occurs at rest, and whether the child is drinking and responding normally.

Call for emergency assistance if the child has marked difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, drooling or trouble swallowing, severe tiredness, or noisy breathing that continues while resting. These signs reflect possible upper-airway obstruction and should not be managed with home remedies alone. Keep the child upright and supervised while help is arranged.

Ask whether the symptoms fit croup or another airway problem, whether a medicine to reduce swelling is appropriate, and how to recognize stridor at rest. Discuss a clear plan for overnight observation and what to do if the cough or breathing changes.
