Croup virus: how the illness behaves

The infection affects the area around the voice box and windpipe. Swelling there changes the child's voice and cough, often making the cough sound rough or bark-like. Some children also have a runny nose, sore throat, or fever. Most children remain able to breathe comfortably between episodes, but symptoms can become more noticeable at night or when the child is upset.
