A mild pattern may involve a barking cough and hoarse voice without noisy breathing when the child is calm. A more concerning pattern includes stridor, the high-pitched sound of air moving through a narrowed upper airway, particularly when the child is resting. Symptoms can also be described as sudden, recurrent, or persistent when their timing matters.

Croup is often caused by a viral infection such as a common cold. The label matters less than the child's current breathing, colour, alertness, and ability to drink. A clinician may change the plan if symptoms progress or return after seeming better.

Keep the child calm, hold them upright, offer small sips if they can swallow comfortably, and avoid smoke or hot steam. Observe whether noisy breathing occurs during rest, crying, or both.
