Croup as a throat infection

Croup commonly begins after cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose or cough. The infection irritates and swells the area around the larynx and windpipe, which explains the distinctive barking cough and hoarse voice. A sore throat may occur, but croup is recognised mainly by upper-airway symptoms. Stridor can happen when air moves through the narrowed area. Different illnesses can also cause throat pain, so the breathing pattern helps guide assessment.

Keep the child calm, upright and away from cigarette smoke or other irritants. Offer fluids frequently and allow rest. Check breathing when the child is quiet, because symptoms during crying can sound different from symptoms at rest. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover prescriptions; many cases follow viral infections, and treatment depends on the examination. Arrange medical advice when symptoms are new, persistent or changing.

Emergency care is needed for stridor at rest, severe breathing effort, blue or grey lips, drooling with inability to swallow, pauses in breathing, or a child who is hard to wake. Seek prompt advice if drinking falls, urination becomes less frequent, fever persists, or the child is deteriorating. Keep the child upright during the journey and explain when the breathing noise started.
