What should you know about croup stridor treatment?

Stridor means air is passing through a narrowed upper airway. A child who makes the sound only while crying may be less affected than one who has it while calm, but both need careful observation. Clinicians assess breathing effort, colour, alertness, hydration, and the sound itself. Croup often includes a barking cough and hoarseness; stridor is the feature that raises concern about airway narrowing.

Keep the child upright, quiet, and close to a trusted adult while arranging medical advice. A clinician may prescribe a corticosteroid to reduce swelling. If symptoms are severe, a nebuliser treatment may be used in an urgent-care setting to open the narrowed airway temporarily while the child is observed. Do not give unprescribed medicine, force fluids, or use steam. Keep the child away from smoke and strong scents.

Call emergency services for stridor at rest, marked pulling in of the chest or neck, blue or grey lips, drooling or inability to swallow, pauses in breathing, collapse, or unusual sleepiness. Do not drive a severely breathless child yourself if emergency transport is available. Even after symptoms settle, seek review if noisy breathing returns, drinking decreases, or the child becomes feverish or less alert.

Ask what treatment was given, how long to observe the child, which symptoms mean the airway is worsening, and whether a written plan is needed for another night-time episode.
