What should you know about croup stridor sound?

Stridor is different from the barking cough of croup. It is usually heard during breathing in and may sound rough, squeaky, or harsh. It can appear only when a child cries or coughs, or it can continue while the child is calm. Stridor while resting suggests more significant narrowing and needs prompt assessment. Croup commonly presents with both a barking cough and hoarseness, but not every noisy breath has the same cause.

Keep the child upright and reduce crying, handling, and unnecessary examination. Listen when they are calm and note whether the sound occurs at rest. Do not put objects in the mouth or use steam. If the child is comfortable and the sound occurs only when upset, arrange prompt clinical advice; a clinician can decide whether croup treatment or observation is appropriate.

Seek emergency help immediately for stridor at rest, visible pulling in around the ribs or neck, blue or grey lips, drooling, trouble swallowing, pauses in breathing, severe agitation followed by exhaustion, or difficulty waking. Keep observing the child while help is arranged. A worsening cough, fever, or reduced drinking also warrants medical review.
