What should you know about croup steroid?

Croup narrows the upper airway through swelling. A prescribed corticosteroid reduces that inflammation; it does not treat the virus that commonly triggers croup. It may be given as a liquid, tablet, or another form chosen for the child. The clinician considers breathing signs, age, ability to swallow, and the overall examination. A barking cough is a common presentation of croup, but steroid treatment should follow an assessment rather than the cough alone.

Give only the medicine and amount prescribed for this episode, using the supplied instructions. Do not substitute an adult steroid, share medicine between children, or repeat an old prescription without advice. Keep the child calm and upright, and offer fluids when swallowing is easy. If breathing remains noisy or effortful after treatment, contact urgent medical services; a nebuliser treatment may be considered by clinicians for more serious airway swelling.

Call emergency services if the child has stridor while resting, severe chest retractions, blue or grey lips, drooling with inability to swallow, exhaustion, or reduced responsiveness. Do not wait for a steroid dose to take effect when breathing is severely difficult. Arrange medical review if symptoms recur, drinking falls, fever concerns you, or the diagnosis is uncertain.
