What should you know about croup stages?

Early croup may look like a runny nose, mild cough, or hoarse voice. The characteristic barking cough may become more obvious later, commonly at night. Some children develop stridor, a high-pitched sound when breathing in. Symptoms can vary from mild to severe and may improve before returning during another night. Croup itself commonly presents with a barking cough; having a cough does not mean a child necessarily has croup.

Watch the child rather than the clock: note breathing effort, alertness, drinking, and whether noisy breathing occurs at rest or only when upset. Keep them upright, calm, and comfortably hydrated. Avoid forcing food or fluids if breathing is difficult. Arrange a child health consultation for persistent symptoms or uncertain diagnosis, since other airway problems can sound similar.

Get emergency help if stridor is present while the child is calm, breathing is visibly hard, the skin between the ribs or above the breastbone pulls inward, the child cannot speak or drink normally, or lips appear blue or grey. Drooling, severe weakness, or difficulty waking are also emergency signs. Seek medical advice if fever is persistent, the cough worsens, or symptoms are not settling.

Ask which symptoms indicate mild, moderate, or severe illness, how often to check breathing overnight, what treatment may be needed, and where to go if the child deteriorates.
