What should you know about croup spasmodic?

The area around the voice box becomes narrowed for a time. A child may wake suddenly with a harsh, seal-like cough and a raspy voice, even if earlier cold symptoms were mild. The episode may ease when the child settles, but symptoms can return, especially overnight. Croup is a condition affecting the upper airway; a barking cough is a common presentation of croup, but a cough alone does not establish the diagnosis.

Keep your child upright and calm, because crying can make noisy breathing worse. Offer small sips of fluid if swallowing is comfortable. Stay nearby and observe breathing, skin colour, alertness, and whether the noise occurs while resting. Do not use steam or give prescription medicine left over from another illness. A clinician may assess the airway and prescribe treatment; a child health consultation can help when episodes recur.

Seek emergency help immediately if the child struggles to breathe, the ribs or neck pull in with each breath, lips look blue or grey, drooling prevents swallowing, or the child is unusually sleepy or difficult to wake. Noisy breathing while resting also needs urgent assessment. Contact a clinician promptly if the cough or hoarseness persists, fever develops, or episodes keep returning.
