What should you know about croup serious?

A barking cough may sound alarming without indicating severe breathing trouble. Clinicians pay closer attention to stridor, which is a harsh or high-pitched sound when air moves through a narrowed upper airway. Stridor during crying can occur with milder illness; stridor while resting is more concerning. Increased work of breathing, reduced drinking, unusual tiredness, and changes in skin or lip colour suggest that the child may not be moving air well.

Keep the child upright and calm. Loosen tight clothing around the neck and avoid forcing food or drink if swallowing is difficult. Do not inspect the throat with an object or use hot steam. If a clinician has given a croup plan, follow it exactly. Urgent services may assess oxygen levels and airway effort; prescribed medicine or nebuliser treatment can reduce swelling or improve airflow in selected situations.

Call emergency services if the child is struggling for each breath, the chest or neck pulls in, lips appear blue or grey, the child cannot swallow saliva, pauses in breathing, becomes floppy, or is hard to wake. Do not wait for the cough to become louder. Same-day assessment is sensible when breathing is noisy at rest, symptoms are steadily worsening, or a child cannot maintain fluids.

Ask how to distinguish stridor from a blocked nose, whether the child needs an airway medicine, which symptoms require emergency transport, and what follow-up is needed.
