Is croup contagious? What families should know

Croup commonly follows a viral upper-respiratory infection. A sibling or adult exposed to the same virus may develop a common cold rather than croup, because airway size and individual response affect the symptoms. The infection can pass through respiratory droplets, close contact, and contaminated hands or objects. A barking cough does not identify the exact virus. A clinician considers the child's breathing, voice, cough, fever, and general condition when assessing croup.

Wash hands after wiping the child's nose, coughing, or helping with medicines. Clean frequently touched objects, avoid sharing cups and utensils, and improve fresh-air flow when practical. Keep a child with active respiratory symptoms away from vulnerable people and follow local childcare guidance. Encourage rest and fluids, keep the child calm and upright during coughing episodes, and arrange a child health consultation if symptoms are unclear. Antibiotics do not treat viral causes unless a clinician identifies another infection.

Contagiousness should never delay emergency care. Call for immediate help if the child has stridor while resting, severe chest or neck pulling, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, drooling with difficulty swallowing, or becomes difficult to wake. Seek prompt advice if drinking falls, the cough worsens, or fever occurs with increasing breathing effort. Keep close contact gentle and calm while help is arranged.

Ask how long to keep the child home, which household contacts need extra protection, whether testing is useful, and which breathing signs require emergency help.
