Croup cough symptoms and what they mean

The illness causes swelling in the upper airway near the voice box. A child may have a runny nose, sore throat, mild fever, or reduced appetite. The cough can sound like a seal bark. Stridor with activity or crying may occur, while stridor when calm suggests more narrowing. Cough alone does not confirm croup; a clinician considers the whole breathing pattern.

Keep your child close, calm, and upright. Give drinks in small amounts if they can swallow normally. Check breathing regularly, including during sleep, and avoid smoke or strong scents. Do not use leftover antibiotics or cough medicines unless a clinician has specifically advised them. A healthcare professional may recommend treatment after listening to the airway.

Get emergency help for struggling or very fast breathing, ribs or neck pulling in, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, severe drowsiness, or inability to swallow saliva. Seek same-day medical advice if stridor is present, symptoms are worsening, the child cannot drink well, or you are worried about how they look or breathe.
