Croup cough during pregnancy: what to know

Croup is mainly an upper-airway illness in children, so an adult with a barking cough may have another cause, such as irritation, reflux, an allergic problem, or infection. Pregnancy can make breathlessness feel more concerning, but it does not explain away wheezing, chest pain, or rapidly worsening symptoms. A clinician can listen to the chest and examine the throat and airway when needed.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and use a comfortable room temperature. Sit upright if coughing or breathlessness is worse when lying down. Before taking a cough mixture, decongestant, herbal product, or essential oil, check its ingredients with your maternity team or pharmacist. Keep a record of medicines already taken and describe the cough, voice changes, wheeze, and any fever.

Seek emergency help for severe or sudden breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, fainting, coughing blood, or inability to speak in full sentences. Contact your maternity or primary-care team promptly for persistent wheeze, a worsening cough, dehydration, fever, or reduced fetal movement later in pregnancy. Do not delay assessment because the cough began like a cold.
