Short answer

Croup itself describes airway swelling, while the virus behind it can spread through coughs, sneezes, hands and shared surfaces.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How contagiousness works

Croup is a pattern of cough and upper-airway swelling, not a single germ. In many cases, a respiratory virus triggers it. That infection may pass to another person even if the exposed person develops a common cold rather than a barking cough. The cough can remain after the most infectious part of the illness has eased, so the sound of the cough does not precisely show how contagious someone is.

Young children can spread respiratory viruses through close contact, droplets and contaminated hands. Avoid sharing cups, cutlery, towels or toys that go straight into the mouth. Ask a clinician about attendance at nursery or school, especially while the child is unwell or has a fever.

Ways to limit spread

Wash hands with soap and water, cover coughs and sneezes, ventilate shared rooms, and clean frequently touched surfaces. Keep the child away from people who are medically vulnerable while they are acutely unwell. Encourage rest and fluids, and keep them calm and upright if coughing is distressing. Do not share leftover prescription medicine with another child.

If another household member develops a cough, hoarse voice or breathing noise, monitor them separately and seek advice if symptoms are concerning. The original cause may be a common cold, acute bronchitis or another respiratory illness rather than croup.

When breathing needs urgent help

Get emergency help for struggling or very fast breathing, pulling in at the ribs or neck, blue or grey lips, drooling with difficulty swallowing, marked drowsiness, or noisy breathing while resting. A child who cannot settle because breathing is difficult needs urgent assessment. Keep them upright and calm while arranging help.

Questions to ask

Ask when the child can safely return to school or nursery, which household contacts need extra precautions, and what symptoms would require urgent review. Tell the clinician when the cough started, whether fever is present, and whether anyone nearby has been ill.

Questions people ask

Can someone catch croup from a child?

They can catch the respiratory virus causing the child’s illness, but they may develop different symptoms, such as a cold or hoarse cough.

Does a barking cough mean the child is still highly contagious?

Not necessarily. The cough can linger after contagiousness has reduced, so follow clinical and childcare guidance and watch the child’s condition.
