What should you know about croup care?

Short answer
Croup care centres on keeping the child calm and upright, offering fluids, watching breathing, and seeking help when it becomes difficult.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What care is trying to achieve
Croup causes swelling in the upper airway, so distress and crying can make symptoms sound worse. Care at home is mainly supportive: reduce agitation, maintain hydration, and notice whether noisy breathing occurs while the child is settled. The usual features are a barking cough and hoarse voice, with stridor in some children. Croup can accompany a cold and may change over the course of the night. A clinician may recommend medicine to reduce airway swelling after assessing the child; treatment depends on the examination and breathing pattern.
A simple care routine
Sit the child upright on your lap or let them choose a comfortable upright position. Use a quiet voice and limit handling while they are coughing. Offer frequent small drinks if they can swallow normally. Keep the air free of tobacco smoke and avoid steam inhalation. Check breathing when calm, including the skin between the ribs and at the base of the neck. Follow prescribed instructions exactly and do not share medicines. If a clinician advises observation, keep your phone available and prepare for a safe trip if symptoms change.
Signs that care must escalate
Call emergency services if the child has stridor while resting, severe effort with the ribs or neck pulling inward, pauses in breathing, difficulty swallowing saliva, drooling, exhaustion, or blue, grey, or very pale lips. Seek prompt medical review for worsening cough, poor fluid intake, fewer wet nappies or toilet visits, or a child who is becoming less responsive. A fever can occur, but urgent breathing signs matter even when temperature is normal.
Planning with your clinician
Ask which symptoms are expected, whether your child needs an examination today, how to monitor breathing overnight, and what to do if the barking cough returns. Clarify the dose and timing of any prescribed medicine, and ask whether a child health consultation or urgent service is the right setting.
