What should you know about croup bad breath?

Croup is an upper-airway illness that commonly causes a hoarse voice, a barking cough, and noisy breathing. Bad breath is not the sound or symptom that identifies croup. A blocked nose can lead to mouth breathing and a dry mouth, which may make breath smell different. Mucus from a cold can also sit at the back of the throat. Less commonly, a sore throat, mouth infection, dental problem, or something stuck in the nose can cause a strong or one-sided odour. Watch the child’s breathing, drinking, alertness, and colour rather than judging severity by smell alone.

Keep your child calm and upright because crying can make noisy breathing harder. Offer frequent small drinks and keep the nose clear with gentle measures suitable for the child’s age. Do not use steam, force food, or give cough medicines unless a clinician has advised them. Check the mouth for obvious sores or dry lips, and notice whether the odour persists after fluids and nasal congestion improve. A clinician can decide whether a child health consultation or prescribed treatment is needed; a nebuliser is not a routine home remedy for every cough.

Seek emergency help if the child struggles to breathe, pulls in the skin between the ribs, has noisy breathing while resting, cannot speak or cry normally, drools or cannot swallow, becomes unusually sleepy, or develops blue, grey, or very pale lips. Arrange prompt medical assessment for worsening croup, poor drinking, dehydration, a persistent foul smell, or odour with fever or severe throat pain. These signs can reflect an airway problem or another illness alongside croup.

Ask whether the breathing pattern fits croup, whether the mouth, throat, teeth, or nose should be examined, and which changes should prompt an urgent return. Mention when the odour began, whether it is one-sided, any fever, reduced drinking, choking episode, or medicine already given.
