What does a crouping cough mean?

People use crouping to describe a rough, barking cough, often with a hoarse voice. In children, a viral upper-airway illness can produce this sound, particularly when the airway is irritated. A cough with a whistling sound from the chest, fever, mucus, or breathlessness can point to a different pattern of illness.

Cough can also occur with a common cold, acute bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, asthma, or acid reflux. A cough lasting many weeks may need assessment for chronic cough. The sound alone cannot identify the cause, so age, breathing effort, timing, triggers, and other symptoms matter.

Keep the person calm and upright, offer small sips of fluid if they can swallow comfortably, and avoid smoke or strong fragrances. Use medicines only as directed for the person's age and health; do not give a child another person's inhaler or cough medicine. Note whether symptoms are worse at night, with exercise, or after exposure to an irritant.

Arrange clinical advice if the cough is persistent, repeatedly returns, disrupts sleep, or occurs with wheezing or chest tightness. Assessment may include listening to the chest and checking breathing rather than relying on the cough sound.

Get emergency help for struggling to breathe, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, severe drowsiness, drooling with difficulty swallowing, or noisy breathing that continues while resting. A child who is pulling in at the ribs or cannot speak, drink, or cry normally needs urgent assessment.
