Short answer

Crescendo angina means angina symptoms are becoming more frequent, longer, more severe, or triggered by less activity, and this change needs urgent medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Meaning
A worsening or changing angina pattern.
Action
Seek urgent assessment, especially for symptoms at rest or with severe features.

Why the pattern matters

Angina is discomfort caused when the heart muscle does not receive enough oxygen-rich blood for its needs. Crescendo angina describes a change from a person's established pattern: discomfort may start with less exertion, last longer, feel stronger, or occur at rest. It can feel like pressure, squeezing, heaviness or chest tightness, and may spread to the arm, shoulder, jaw, back or upper abdomen.

High blood pressure can contribute to cardiovascular strain, but chest symptoms cannot be safely explained by blood pressure alone. A changing pattern needs assessment for reduced blood flow and other urgent causes.

What to do now

Stop exertion and sit or rest. If symptoms are new, worsening, severe, or occurring at rest, seek emergency help rather than driving yourself. Use prescribed angina medicine exactly as instructed; do not borrow medication or take an extra dose without guidance. Note when symptoms began, what brought them on, how long they lasted, and any associated sweating, nausea or breathlessness.

Even if the discomfort settles, arrange urgent medical review. Assessment may include an Electrocardiogram and other tests. Treatment may involve measures such as Blood Pressure Medication or Statin Therapy when clinically appropriate.

When to seek emergency help

Call emergency services for chest pressure or tightness that does not settle promptly with rest, symptoms at rest, severe breathlessness, fainting, cold sweating, sudden weakness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back. Do not wait to see whether a changing pattern becomes typical again.

How does my symptom pattern compare with stable angina? Which symptoms should prompt an emergency call? What tests do I need, and how soon? How should I use my prescribed angina medicine? Which cardiovascular risk factors should we address?

Questions people ask

Is crescendo angina the same as stable angina?

No. Stable angina follows a predictable pattern, while crescendo angina is a new or worsening pattern that requires urgent assessment.

Can chest tightness be a sign of crescendo angina?

Chest tightness can occur with angina, but the symptom has several possible causes. A changing or severe pattern needs urgent evaluation.
