What should you know about cranberry juice dark urine?

Short answer
Dark urine after cranberry juice may reflect pigment, concentrated urine, or another cause that needs attention if it persists.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible explanation
- Cranberry pigment or concentrated urine
- Useful observation
- Whether the colour changes with regular fluid intake
- Concerning associated signs
- Yellowing, abdominal pain, fever, blood, or very little urine
What the colour can mean
Cranberry products may alter the appearance of urine, while low fluid intake makes urine more concentrated and darker. Dehydration often comes with thirst, dry mouth, headache, tiredness, or dizziness. The colour alone cannot identify the cause.
Dark brown urine, tea-coloured urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, pale stools, abdominal pain, fever, or marked tiredness can occur with liver problems such as hepatitis A or hepatitis B. Burning, urgency, or blood in the urine may suggest a urinary problem instead.
What to do now
Note when the colour change began, how much cranberry juice you drank, and whether the change follows each use. Drink fluids regularly unless you have been given a fluid restriction. Check whether urine returns toward its usual colour as hydration improves, but do not use cranberry juice as a substitute for medical assessment.
Avoid sharing towels, and wash your hands after using the toilet if you also have diarrhoea or vomiting. A clinician may need a urine sample or blood tests when the change continues or other symptoms appear.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, yellow skin or eyes, or visible blood in the urine. Arrange prompt medical advice if dark urine persists after normal drinking, keeps recurring, or is accompanied by fever, painful urination, pale stools, or unusual tiredness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the colour fits a food or drink effect, dehydration, a urinary condition, or liver disease. Share your medicines and supplements, recent illness, fluid intake, bowel symptoms, pain, and any photograph that shows the colour change.

Questions people ask
Can cranberry juice make urine look darker?
It can change urine appearance in some people, but persistent dark or brown urine should not automatically be attributed to the drink.
Should I stop drinking fluids?
No. Drink regularly unless a clinician has prescribed a fluid restriction. Seek advice if the colour does not improve or other symptoms develop.
