Cracked Heels Causes: What You Should Know

Short answer
Cracked heels usually develop when dry, thickened skin around the heel loses flexibility and splits under pressure. Open shoes, prolonged standing, friction, hot water, harsh cleansers, and low humidity can all contribute. Fungal infection, eczema, psoriasis, or conditions that affect skin sensation and healing can also be involved.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common trigger
- Dry, thickened heel skin exposed to pressure and friction
- Helpful habit
- Moisturise after washing and protect the heel with suitable footwear
- Get checked promptly
- Deep or infected-looking cracks, especially with diabetes or numbness
What the cracks may mean
A shallow crack with rough, flaky skin often fits simple dryness and pressure-related thickening. Pain, bleeding, or a crack that catches on socks suggests a deeper fissure. Itching, peeling between the toes, or scaling along the sole can point toward Athlete's Foot, while redness, swelling, blisters, or recurring inflamed patches may fit eczema or another inflammatory skin problem. Diabetes, reduced circulation, or reduced sensation can make a small split harder to notice and slower to heal.
The appearance alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may look at the edges of the fissure, the soles and spaces between the toes, your footwear, and any other skin changes before recommending treatment.
What you can do at home
Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat the feet dry, and apply a thick fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Emollient Therapy can help soften the hard rim and reduce further splitting. Wear supportive, well-fitting shoes that cover and protect the heel, and change damp socks. Avoid cutting the thick skin with blades, picking at the fissure, or applying strong acids to an open crack.
If the split is open, keep it clean and protected from rubbing. Stop a product that stings or causes a rash. Persistent scaling or itch needs assessment because moisturiser alone will not address every possible cause.
When to seek medical care
Arrange a medical assessment if the crack is deep, repeatedly bleeds, becomes more painful, or does not start improving with gentle care. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or a foul smell, which can indicate infection. If you have diabetes, poor circulation, numbness, or a weakened immune system, have a foot fissure checked early rather than treating it aggressively at home.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern looks most consistent with dryness, fungal infection, eczema, psoriasis, or another cause; which moisturiser or dressing is suitable for an open fissure; and whether your medicines, circulation, sensation, or blood sugar could affect healing.

Questions people ask
Can dry skin cause cracked heels?
Yes. When the heel becomes dry and thick, it can lose flexibility; pressure from standing or walking may then split the surface.
Can Athlete's Foot cause heel cracks?
It can. Fungal infection may cause scaling, peeling, or itching on the sole and between the toes, sometimes alongside heel fissures.
Should I file or cut cracked heel skin?
Avoid blades and aggressive filing, particularly if the crack is open or you have reduced sensation. Gentle moisturising and professional advice are safer options.
