Cracked Heel Open Wound: What to Know

A heel fissure becomes an open wound when the split reaches through the outer skin and exposes tender tissue. It may sting when water touches it, bleed after pressure, or reopen when the heel bends. The wound itself does not prove infection. Redness that spreads, increasing warmth, swelling, pus, or worsening pain is more concerning. Dry Skin and thick callused edges can keep pulling the split apart, and Athlete's Foot may contribute when there is scaling or itching on the same foot.

Rinse with clean running water, remove visible dirt gently, and pat the surrounding skin dry. Cover the opening with a sterile or clean non-stick dressing and change it when wet or dirty. Wear clean socks and shoes that do not press on the heel. Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, harsh exfoliants, and deep cutting, as these can irritate healing tissue. Keep moisturiser on intact skin beside the wound rather than inside it; ask about Emollient Therapy after the opening has closed.

Seek prompt assessment if bleeding does not settle with gentle pressure, the wound is deep or gaping, or walking becomes difficult. Arrange urgent care for spreading redness, heat, swelling, pus, fever, chills, or rapidly increasing pain. A foot wound needs earlier professional advice if you have diabetes, numbness, poor circulation, or reduced immune defences, even when it looks small.

Ask whether the fissure needs a particular dressing, whether the thick edge should be treated by a professional, and how to prevent the wound from reopening. Tell the clinician how it happened, how much it bled, what you applied, and whether you have itching, scaling, numbness, or a history of slow-healing wounds.
