Why Cracked Heels Hurt and What to Do

Short answer
Cracked heels can hurt because fissures expose sensitive skin and flex with each step, while dryness, pressure, or inflammation keeps the split from closing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Pain trigger
- The heel fissure flexes and opens under walking pressure
- Comfort measure
- Use a protective dressing and supportive footwear
Why walking may sting
Heel skin carries body weight and stretches when you stand or walk. A fissure can therefore pull apart repeatedly, causing sharp pain or tenderness. Thick callused skin around the split, dry skin, open-backed footwear, and prolonged standing can add pressure. Athlete's foot may also cause scaling or irritation, particularly when changes extend toward the sole or between the toes. Pain alone cannot identify the cause.
Ways to reduce discomfort
Wash gently, pat the heel dry, and apply a thick bland emollient to the surrounding dry skin. Cover an open fissure with a clean non-stick dressing to limit rubbing, and wear cushioned, supportive shoes rather than open-backed footwear. Do not cut into the callus or use aggressive files on painful broken skin. Keep the dressing clean and change it when wet. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether an emollient routine or treatment for fungal disease is appropriate.
When pain needs review
Seek prompt medical care if the heel becomes hot, swollen, increasingly red, or produces pus, or if you have fever. Get advice for bleeding that does not stop, a deep wound, inability to walk normally, or pain that is worsening. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced foot sensation should have painful cracks assessed early. Recurrent fissures also deserve a review for contributing skin conditions or footwear pressure.
Questions for your doctor
How deep is the fissure, and is there evidence of infection or athlete's foot? What dressing, emollient, and footwear changes will protect it while I walk?

Questions people ask
Why does a heel crack hurt more when I walk?
Walking loads and stretches the heel, so the split can pull apart and expose sensitive tissue with each step.
Should I file a painful cracked heel?
Avoid aggressive filing on broken skin; soften surrounding thick skin gradually and seek advice if the fissure is deep or recurrent.
