What should you know about cracked eczema hands?

Atopic Dermatitis can weaken the skin barrier, allowing moisture to escape and irritants to enter more easily. People may notice itching, redness, roughness, scaling, and splits around the fingers, knuckles, or palms. Itchy Skin and Skin Cracking can describe the symptoms; crusting, oozing, increasing warmth, or tenderness may signal a complication. Repeated wet work, detergents, solvents, gloves, and fragranced products can aggravate the hands.

Clean with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry without rubbing. Apply a thick emollient after washing and whenever the skin feels tight. Book a review if cracks interfere with sleep, work, grip, or daily washing, or if flares recur despite careful protection. Seek prompt advice for spreading redness, pus, yellow crusting, marked pain, fever, or rapidly worsening swelling. If one hand is affected much more than the other, a clinician may check for contact allergy, infection, or a fungal cause rather than assuming eczema alone.
