What should you know about CPPD crystals in synovial fluid?

Synovial fluid is the slippery fluid inside a joint. During an attack, a clinician may remove a sample with a needle and examine it for calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystals. The finding can help explain sudden pain, warmth, swelling, and restricted movement. It does not by itself describe the severity of damage or prove that every episode has the same cause.
