Can you have COVID-19 without a cough?

A cough is only one possible feature of COVID-19. Some people mainly notice fever, sore throat, blocked or runny nose, fatigue, headache, body aches, nausea, diarrhoea, or loss of smell or taste. No cough does not confirm or exclude COVID-19. Allergic rhinitis, the common cold, acid reflux and other airway conditions can produce overlapping symptoms, while asthma or bronchitis may cause cough with a different pattern.

If you have a recent exposure or compatible symptoms, follow current local testing and infection-control advice. Limit close contact with people at higher risk while you are unwell, improve ventilation, wash hands and wear a well-fitting mask where advised. Rest, drink fluids and record changes in breathing, temperature and alertness. Ask a clinician promptly about treatment timing if you are at increased risk of severe illness.

Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, persistent chest pain or pressure, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, or difficulty staying awake. Arrange medical advice for worsening fever, dehydration, wheezing, or symptoms that are not settling. A cough may appear later, but waiting for one should not delay care when breathing or general condition is deteriorating.
