COVID eye discharge: what to know

Viral irritation can make the eyes water, redden, or produce a small amount of sticky discharge. One or both eyes may be affected, and rubbing can spread irritation. COVID-19 can be present at the same time, but eye discharge is also seen with [Conjunctivitis](/conditions/conjunctivitis/) and [Allergic Conjunctivitis](/conditions/allergic-conjunctivitis/). The colour and amount of discharge do not reliably identify the cause by themselves.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eyes. Gently clean away discharge with clean water and a fresh clean pad for each eye, then discard the pad. Avoid rubbing, sharing towels, eye make-up, or contact lenses until the eyes settle. Do not use someone else’s eye drops. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether lubricating drops are suitable and whether an examination is needed.

Seek urgent eye care for severe pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, injury, marked swelling, or difficulty opening the eye. Arrange an assessment if discharge is heavy, symptoms are worsening, or a contact-lens wearer develops a red painful eye. Ask whether the pattern fits viral, allergic, or another form of conjunctivitis, how long to avoid lenses, and which drops are appropriate. Describe itching, pain, light sensitivity, vision changes, fever, and whether anyone close to you has similar symptoms.
