What should you know about COVID chills without fever?

Short answer
COVID-19 may present with chills without fever, although chills also occur with several unrelated illnesses.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Normal temperature
- Does not by itself exclude infection
- Helpful record
- Temperature, timing, duration, exposures, and associated symptoms
- Urgent concern
- Rapid deterioration, confusion, collapse, or severe breathing difficulty
How to understand the symptom
Without fever means your temperature has not reached the fever range when measured; it does not show whether an infection is present. Shivering can be part of the immune response, but it can also follow cold exposure, stress, dehydration, low food intake, or medicine effects. Respiratory infections such as Influenza and Pneumonia may cause chills, while urinary symptoms can point toward a Urinary Tract Infection or Kidney Infection. Recent travel or insect exposure changes the questions a clinician may ask about Malaria or Dengue Fever.
What you can do now
Use a reliable thermometer and write down readings with the time and your symptoms. Rest, keep comfortably warm, sip fluids, and eat if you can. If COVID-19 is possible, follow current testing and infection-control advice and reduce close contact while unwell. Do not use leftover antibiotics or combine cold medicines without checking their ingredients. Arrange a clinical review if chills keep returning, interfere with sleep or activity, or occur with cough, painful urination, abdominal pain, or unusual tiredness.
When help is needed
Call emergency services for severe breathing trouble, new confusion, collapse, blue or grey lips, or inability to stay awake. Seek urgent assessment for severe weakness, persistent vomiting, a new widespread rash, severe headache, or intense back or side pain. Sepsis can develop without a clearly measured fever, so rapidly worsening illness deserves attention even when the thermometer is normal.
What to discuss
Ask which causes fit your symptoms and exposures, whether you need COVID testing or urine testing, and how to monitor yourself overnight. Mention pregnancy, immune problems, long-term conditions, recent travel, and new medicines. Ask for a clear threshold for same-day review or emergency help.
