Short answer

COVID-19 can cause marked tiredness during the infection and for some time afterwards, so rest, fluids, and a gradual return to activity are helpful.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Severe breathing difficulty, chest pressure, confusion, or inability to stay awake

What the tiredness can mean

Fatigue with COVID-19 may feel different from ordinary sleepiness. You might have low energy, poor concentration, heavy limbs, or feel worse after physical or mental effort. Fever, disrupted sleep, reduced appetite, and the body's immune response can all add to the drained feeling. A person with COVID-19 may also become tired because illness makes it harder to eat and drink normally.

Energy often returns unevenly. Feeling better for a day does not always mean your usual workload or exercise is suitable yet. If tiredness continues, changes, or interferes with work, study, self-care, or sleep, a clinician can consider COVID-19 and other possible contributors such as anaemia, dehydration, burnout, coeliac disease, chronic kidney disease, or another health problem.

What you can do

Give yourself permission to reduce demands while you are unwell. Keep a regular sleep routine, drink fluids regularly, and choose small nourishing meals if your appetite is low. Break tasks into short periods with rests before you feel depleted. Gentle movement around the home may be reasonable when you can manage it, but stop if it causes marked breathlessness, dizziness, chest discomfort, or a clear worsening later that day or the next.

Return to work, study, driving, and exercise in stages. Keep a simple record of activity and symptoms so you can spot patterns and share them with a clinician. Avoid using alcohol as a way to sleep or cope with fatigue, since it can disturb sleep and worsen dehydration.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for severe difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain or pressure, new confusion, inability to stay awake, fainting, or blue, grey, or unusually pale lips or skin. Get prompt advice if you cannot keep fluids down, are passing very little urine, or feel increasingly weak or dizzy, as these can signal dehydration or a more serious illness.

Arrange a medical review if fatigue is not gradually improving, returns after initial recovery, or prevents normal daily activities. Also seek advice if fever returns, breathing becomes harder, or you have a condition or medication that may raise your risk from infection. A clinician can decide whether you need an examination or tests and help plan a safe return to activity.

Questions for your doctor

You could ask: Could anything besides COVID-19 be contributing to my fatigue? What level of activity is suitable for me now? Which changes should prompt urgent help? Do my symptoms or medicines make dehydration, sleep disruption, or another condition more likely?

Questions people ask

How long can tiredness last after COVID-19?

Recovery varies. Tiredness may continue after other symptoms ease, but it should gradually improve. Arrange a review if it is not improving or is disrupting everyday life.

Should I exercise when I am tired with COVID-19?

Rest during the acute illness and restart with gentle activity only when you feel able. Build up slowly and pause if symptoms worsen during or after activity.

Could tiredness be caused by something other than COVID-19?

Yes. Sleep disruption, dehydration, anaemia, burnout, and other conditions can contribute, so persistent or changing fatigue deserves a clinical assessment.
