Coughing up clear phlegm with bubbles

Bubbles may form when air passes through thin mucus during coughing. Clear phlegm can occur with a viral respiratory illness, post-nasal drainage from chronic sinusitis, or airway irritation. Acute bronchitis may cause a cough that continues after other cold symptoms settle. COPD and bronchiectasis can produce ongoing sputum and breathing symptoms. Pneumonia may cause fever, chest pain, breathlessness, and a change in phlegm, although mucus colour alone does not diagnose it. Notice whether the bubbles occur repeatedly, whether the mucus is frothy, and whether your breathing is changing.

Drink fluids if appropriate for you, avoid smoke and dusty air, and use gentle coughing rather than repeated forceful throat-clearing. Track the cough, phlegm, temperature, wheeze, and activity-related breathlessness. If you have a prescribed inhaler, use it according to your plan. Arrange medical advice if the cough persists, keeps returning, or is affecting sleep or daily activity. Antibiotics are not useful for every cause.

Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips, confusion, fainting, or inability to speak in full sentences. Arrange same-day assessment for new frothy sputum with breathlessness, a high fever, or a marked decline in your usual breathing. Blood in the phlegm also needs prompt review.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest airway irritation, sinus drainage, or a lung condition, and whether you need a chest examination or breathing tests. Ask how to use your inhaler and which changes should trigger urgent care.
