Coughing and Wheezing When Lying Down

Lying flat can allow stomach contents to move upward and irritate the throat, or let nasal mucus collect and provoke coughing. Asthma and COPD can cause wheeze that becomes more obvious at rest or overnight. A chest infection may produce cough and noisy breathing in any position, sometimes with fever or phlegm. If sitting up consistently improves breathing, mention that pattern to a clinician; it is a clue, not a diagnosis. New positional breathlessness should not be ignored.

Sit upright when symptoms start and avoid lying flat immediately after meals. Keep a record of whether the episode follows food, nasal congestion, exercise, smoke, or a cold. Use only medicines prescribed for you and follow the written inhaler plan. Arrange an appointment if symptoms recur, wake you, limit activity, or are accompanied by ankle swelling or unusual tiredness. A clinician can examine your chest and decide whether tests or treatment are needed.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, chest pressure, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or inability to speak in full sentences.
