Coughing and vomiting white foam: what to know

Short answer
Coughing and vomiting white foam may reflect mucus, swallowed saliva, reflux, or stomach irritation, but warning symptoms need urgent care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First step
- Sit upright and take small sips when settled
- Watch for
- Breathing trouble, severe pain, blood, or dehydration
What the foam may represent
Foam can form when air mixes with mucus or saliva during repeated coughing. After retching, it may be saliva and stomach fluid, especially when the stomach is empty. A blocked or irritated airway can provoke coughing, while nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, or repeated vomiting may point toward [Gastroenteritis](/conditions/gastroenteritis/) or [Food Poisoning](/conditions/food-poisoning/). Severe abdominal pain has other possible causes, including [Gallstones](/conditions/gallstones/) or [Pancreatitis](/conditions/pancreatitis/). The appearance of foam alone does not identify the cause.
What you can do
Sit upright, take slow breaths, and rinse your mouth after vomiting. When retching settles, take small sips of fluid; pause if this triggers more vomiting. Avoid alcohol, heavy meals, and lying flat immediately after eating. Note the timing, amount, colour, cough, abdominal symptoms, and urine output. Do not take anti-sickness or anti-diarrhoeal medicines without advice if you have severe pain, blood, or a possible infection.
When to seek care
Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, blue lips, severe chest or abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck with severe headache, or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt assessment is needed for blood or green vomit, marked dehydration, persistent vomiting, or symptoms in a very young child, older adult, or pregnant person. [Vomiting](/symptoms/vomiting/) that keeps returning also needs review.
Questions for your doctor
Explain whether coughing or nausea came first, how often vomiting occurred, what you have managed to drink, and whether pain, diarrhoea, headache, or breathing changes are present. Ask how to replace fluids and whether examination or testing is needed.

Questions people ask

No. It can be mucus, saliva, or stomach fluid, but repeated vomiting or breathing difficulty needs medical assessment.
What should I drink after vomiting?
Once retching settles, try small frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, stopping if vomiting returns.
