Coughing and eye discharge: what should you know?

A respiratory virus can irritate the airways and the surface of the eyes at the same time. Conjunctivitis presents with eye discharge and may accompany a cough when an infection affects nearby mucous membranes. Allergic conjunctivitis presents with itchy, watery eyes rather than thick discharge, and allergy symptoms can irritate the throat and trigger coughing. The colour and texture of discharge, whether one or both eyes are affected, and the presence of fever, runny nose, itching, or eye pain help a clinician narrow the possibilities.

Eye discharge that makes the eyelids stick together can spread infection through hand contact. Avoid sharing towels, pillows, cosmetics, or eye drops while the cause is unclear.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eyes. Gently clean discharge with a fresh, clean damp pad for each eye, wiping from the inner corner outward. Rest, drink fluids, and use a humidifier or warm drink to soothe a cough. Do not use leftover antibiotic eye drops, and remove contact lenses until the eye has recovered and a clinician says they are suitable again. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy treatment or an examination is appropriate.

Seek urgent medical help for severe eye pain, a change in vision, marked light sensitivity, injury, swelling around the eye, breathing difficulty, or a cough with blue lips or confusion. Arrange prompt assessment if discharge is thick and persistent, symptoms are worsening, or a contact-lens wearer develops a painful red eye. Children who seem unusually sleepy, struggle to breathe, or cannot drink need urgent attention.
