Short answer

A cough without phlegm is a dry cough that may come from irritation, infection, allergy, reflux, asthma, or another airway problem.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Coughing is a protective reflex that clears irritants from the throat and airways. A dry cough can feel scratchy, tickling, or harsh, and repeated coughing can further irritate the throat. The sound alone cannot identify the cause.

What a dry cough can mean

A recent viral illness such as the common cold can leave the airways sensitive after other symptoms improve. Smoke, dust, strong fragrances, dry air, or talking for long periods may trigger coughing. Post-nasal drainage from allergic rhinitis can irritate the throat even when mucus is not obvious.

Acid reflux can irritate the throat and may cause coughing after meals or when lying down. Asthma can present mainly as cough, sometimes with wheezing, chest tightness, or breathlessness. Acute bronchitis may also cause a dry cough during an airway infection. A cough that continues or keeps returning needs assessment for causes such as chronic cough, asthma, reflux, or another lung condition. For condition-specific information, see [Common Cold](/conditions/common-cold/), [Allergic Rhinitis](/conditions/allergic-rhinitis/), [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/), or [Asthma](/conditions/asthma/).

What you can do now

Sip fluids regularly and consider warm drinks to soothe an irritated throat. Avoid smoking and second-hand smoke, and reduce exposure to dust, sprays, and other known triggers. A clean humidifier may help if indoor air is dry; follow its cleaning instructions to avoid spreading germs.

If reflux seems connected, note whether coughing follows meals or worsens when you lie down, and discuss this pattern with a clinician. Do not start, stop, or share prescription medicines based on the cough alone. A pharmacist or clinician can help you choose an appropriate treatment, especially for a child, pregnancy, older age, or an existing heart or lung condition.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, sudden confusion, fainting, or chest pain. Prompt assessment is also needed if you cough blood, feel markedly unwell, or have a high fever with breathing symptoms.

Arrange a medical review if the cough is persistent, repeatedly interrupts sleep, limits activity, follows an inhaled irritant, or comes with wheezing, breathlessness, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, or difficulty swallowing. Babies and young children with breathing changes should be assessed promptly. Bronchiolitis and bronchiectasis require different evaluation and treatment; more information is available under [Bronchiolitis](/conditions/bronchiolitis/) and [Bronchiectasis](/conditions/bronchiectasis/).

Questions for your doctor

Ask what causes fit the timing and pattern of your cough, whether your breathing needs checking, and whether reflux, allergies, asthma, or a recent infection could be contributing. Mention smoking or vaping, workplace dust or chemicals, new medicines, fever, wheezing, chest pain, and any change in exercise tolerance.

Bring a brief record of when the cough occurs, what triggers it, whether it wakes you, and what has eased or worsened it. Ask how long you should monitor it and which warning signs should prompt earlier review. Persistent symptoms may be assessed as chronic cough when appropriate; read more about [Chronic Cough](/conditions/chronic-cough/) and [Acute Bronchitis](/conditions/acute-bronchitis/).

Questions people ask

Is a cough without phlegm always a chest infection?

No. A dry cough may follow a viral illness, but irritation, allergy, reflux, asthma, and other airway problems can also cause it. The wider symptom pattern and examination help identify the cause.

When should a dry cough be checked?

Arrange a review when it persists, keeps returning, disrupts sleep, limits activity, or occurs with wheezing, breathlessness, fever, chest pain, coughing blood, or other concerning symptoms.

What information should I share at an appointment?

Describe when the cough began, its triggers, whether it is worse at night or after meals, recent infections, smoke or dust exposure, medicines, and any breathing or chest symptoms.
