Cough with phlegm during pregnancy: what to know

Pregnancy can make nasal congestion and reflux more noticeable, both of which may provoke coughing. A common cold or acute bronchitis can bring up mucus. Allergic rhinitis may cause drainage down the throat. Asthma can change during pregnancy and may present with cough, wheeze or chest tightness. Bronchiectasis causes recurrent mucus-producing cough, while bronchiolitis mainly concerns infants and young children. These possibilities overlap, so the pattern, examination and pregnancy stage help guide care.

Tell your maternity or primary-care team about the cough, especially if you have asthma or another lung condition. Rest, take fluids, use gentle humidified air, and avoid smoke and irritants. Check with a pharmacist or clinician before taking cough, cold, pain or herbal products; pregnancy changes which medicines are suitable. Do not stop a prescribed asthma medicine without advice. Keep track of fever, breathing, phlegm and any reduced ability to eat or drink.

Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue lips, confusion, fainting, chest pain, or coughing blood. Seek same-day advice for a high fever, worsening breathing, dehydration, persistent vomiting, or a cough that is rapidly worsening. Contact your maternity team if you feel unusually unwell or notice symptoms that concern you, even when the cough seems mild.
