What should you know about coughing up pink mucus?

A pale pink tinge may appear when a small amount of blood mixes with phlegm after forceful or repeated coughing. Irritation from a cold, acute bronchitis, asthma, or drainage from the nose can contribute. Reflux can also trigger a persistent cough that makes the throat and airways sore. Less commonly, pink, frothy sputum with breathlessness may signal fluid affecting the lungs and needs prompt assessment.

The colour alone cannot identify the cause. Note whether the material is streaked, frothy, thick, or increasing, and whether it came up after coughing rather than from the nose, gums, or throat.

If this happened once and you otherwise feel well, rest your voice, drink fluids, avoid smoke and vaping, and monitor the next episodes. Do not start leftover antibiotics or medicines that suppress coughing without advice. Arrange a clinical review if the colour returns, the cough persists, or you have a lung condition such as asthma or bronchiectasis. A clinician may check your oxygen level, listen to your chest, and decide whether further tests are needed.

Seek emergency help for pink or blood-stained sputum with severe breathlessness, chest pain, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Urgent assessment is also needed if you cough up more than a small streak, the sputum is frothy, or bleeding continues. If you take a blood-thinning medicine, have recently had chest surgery, or have a known clotting problem, seek advice promptly even when the amount seems small.

Ask: Could the colour be coming from my nose or gums? Does my cough fit a cold, acute bronchitis, reflux, asthma, or another airway problem? Should I have my chest examined or my medicines reviewed? What changes in colour, amount, breathing, or pain should make me seek urgent help?
