Cough that itches the throat: common causes

The throat contains sensitive nerves that react to dry air, smoke, dust, mucus or inflammation. A [Common Cold](/conditions/common-cold/) may cause a scratchy cough, while [Allergic Rhinitis](/conditions/allergic-rhinitis/) can add sneezing and a runny or blocked nose. [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/) may irritate the throat, particularly after meals or when lying down. [Asthma](/conditions/asthma/) can cause cough and wheeze, sometimes without obvious mucus.

A cough that continues or repeatedly returns may be described as [Chronic Cough](/conditions/chronic-cough/). Cough linked with repeated infections or large amounts of mucus may need assessment for conditions such as [Bronchiectasis](/conditions/bronchiectasis/). In young children, [Bronchiolitis](/conditions/bronchiolitis/) has a different pattern and should be assessed in context.

Sip water, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and consider whether dry indoor air or a recent infection is aggravating the throat. Saline nasal care may help when nasal symptoms are present. Track timing, triggers, mucus, wheeze, heartburn and medicines. Do not use someone else’s inhaler or assume an antibiotic is needed; treatment depends on the underlying pattern.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, blue lips, chest pain, coughing blood, facial swelling or sudden severe worsening. Arrange a clinical review if the cough persists, affects sleep, follows choking, comes with fever or wheeze, or keeps returning without a clear trigger. Seek advice sooner for an infant, a frail older person or someone with significant heart or lung disease.
