A cough that sounds like a bark: what to know

Listen for noisy breathing between coughs, particularly a high-pitched sound when breathing in. Drooling, trouble swallowing, a muffled voice, or visible pulling in at the ribs suggests the airway may be narrowed. A cough beginning suddenly after choking needs emergency assessment. In older children and adults, a persistent hoarse cough may follow infection or irritation; recurrent night cough or wheeze warrants review for asthma or reflux.

Keep the person calm and upright, because crying and agitation can make noisy breathing harder. Offer small sips of fluid if swallowing is easy. Avoid smoke, steam burns, and forcing food or drink. Do not give a child an over-the-counter cough medicine without checking the age instructions with a pharmacist. Note the cough sound, voice change, fever, breathing effort, and whether symptoms began after a possible choking episode.

Seek emergency help for struggling or rapidly worsening breathing, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, severe drowsiness, drooling with inability to swallow, or a harsh noise present even when resting. Obtain prompt medical advice for repeated episodes, dehydration, high fever, chest pain, or a cough that is not improving. Young children and people with known airway or lung disease may need earlier assessment.
