Cough with a seal-like sound: what to know

The sound alone cannot identify its cause. A common cold may inflame the throat and voice box. In young children, bronchiolitis can cause cough with noisy breathing and feeding difficulty. Asthma may produce cough, wheeze or chest tightness, while allergic rhinitis can cause throat irritation from drainage. Acute bronchitis may follow a viral illness and keep the cough going after other symptoms ease. Acid reflux can irritate the throat, especially after meals or when lying down. Repeated mucus-producing cough deserves assessment for bronchiectasis, and a cough lasting a long time may fit chronic cough.

Keep the person calm and upright, offer frequent fluids, and avoid smoke or strong scents. For a child, watch breathing effort and drinking rather than focusing only on the noise. Do not use steam from boiling water because it can burn skin and airways. Use medicines only as directed for the person’s age and health conditions; cough remedies are not suitable for every child.

Seek emergency help if breathing is difficult, the skin pulls in between the ribs, lips look blue or grey, the person cannot speak or drink normally, or there is unusual sleepiness. Prompt assessment is also needed for a sudden barking cough after choking, a high-pitched noise when breathing in, or rapid deterioration. Arrange a clinical review when the cough persists, repeatedly returns, or comes with wheezing, fever or poor feeding.

Does the sound come from the throat or chest? Is the cough worse at night, after meals or with exercise? Could an inhaler, allergy treatment or reflux plan help? What breathing changes should prompt emergency care?
