What should you know about cough mixture for dry cough?

A dry cough produces little or no mucus and may feel scratchy, tickly, or exhausting. It can follow a viral illness, but allergic rhinitis, asthma, acid reflux, and chronic cough can also present with a dry cough. A dry sound alone cannot distinguish among these possibilities.

Some mixtures soothe the throat; others act on the cough reflex. Relief can be temporary, and suppressing a cough is not always suitable when mucus needs to be cleared.

Use only the label dose and measure it accurately. Avoid doubling up with another cold product until a pharmacist has checked the ingredients. Ask about drowsiness before driving or working at height, and check advice if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or giving the medicine to a child.

Sip fluids, avoid tobacco smoke and strong fragrances, and try a simple soothing drink if appropriate for you. Note when the cough appears, such as after meals, at night, or around dust, because that pattern helps guide assessment.

Get urgent help for marked breathing difficulty, blue lips, fainting, confusion, or chest pain. Seek prompt advice for wheezing, coughing blood, high fever, or a cough that is steadily worsening. Arrange a review if the dry cough does not settle, keeps disturbing sleep, or returns without an obvious trigger.

Ask whether your cough sounds like irritation, allergy, reflux, or airway narrowing, and whether a suppressant is appropriate. Tell the clinician about night symptoms, wheeze, heartburn, nasal symptoms, new medicines, and recent infections.
