Cough during pregnancy: what should you know?

Short answer
During pregnancy, a cough is often linked to an infection, reflux, or nasal irritation, but medicine choices should be checked with a maternity or primary-care clinician.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Medicines
- Check cough, cold, pain, and herbal products before use.
- Monitor
- Pay attention to fever, hydration, wheeze, chest pain, and breathing.
Why pregnancy changes the advice
Pregnancy can make reflux and nasal congestion more noticeable, and a viral illness may leave an irritated cough behind. Acute bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, and asthma are also possible explanations. A cough itself does not show whether the pregnancy is affected, but fever, poor fluid intake, or breathing difficulty can make you unwell and need assessment.
Tell the clinician how far along the pregnancy is, whether you have asthma or other conditions, and every medicine or supplement you use. They can distinguish a throat irritation from chest symptoms and choose suitable treatment.
Practical measures
Sip water or warm drinks, rest, avoid smoke and dusty air, and consider a humidified room if dry air triggers coughing. Honey may soothe an adult throat, but avoid it if you have been told to restrict sugars. Check every pharmacy product with a pharmacist or maternity clinician before taking it; combination cold remedies and herbal products are not automatically suitable in pregnancy. Keep track of fever, wheeze, mucus, and breathlessness.
When you need medical help
Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, blue lips, or coughing blood. Contact your maternity or primary-care team promptly for persistent fever, dehydration, worsening wheeze, reduced ability to function, or a cough that is not settling. If you have asthma, follow your personalised action plan and seek help when relief is inadequate.
Questions to take with you
Ask which cough or fever treatments fit your stage of pregnancy, whether your symptoms suggest reflux, allergy, infection, or asthma, and whether you need an examination. Clarify which warning signs should prompt same-day help and whether your usual medicines should be continued.

Questions people ask
Is a cough during pregnancy always harmful to the baby?
A cough is often caused by irritation or infection and does not by itself show a problem, but fever or breathing difficulty warrants medical advice.
Can I use an over-the-counter cough remedy?
Ask a pharmacist or maternity clinician first because ingredients and combination products vary in suitability during pregnancy.
