What should you know about cough, fever and hives?

Hives are raised, itchy welts that can appear suddenly and change location. An infection can occur alongside hives, and a medicine or food can trigger them; fever makes an infection more relevant but does not prove the cause. Cough may come from the same respiratory illness or from airway irritation. A cough with hives does not by itself diagnose an allergy. Note whether the cough began after a new medicine, injection, food, sting, or household exposure.

Stop a suspected new non-essential product and seek medical advice about whether it should be avoided; do not stop an essential prescribed medicine without advice. Keep the person cool, avoid scratching, and follow a previously prescribed allergy action plan if one exists. An antihistamine may help itching when it is suitable for the person's age and health, but it will not treat breathing obstruction. Photograph moving hives and list recent exposures, medicines, and foods.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, hoarse voice, wheezing, difficulty breathing, faintness, collapse, or repeated vomiting with hives. Seek same-day assessment for fever with a child who appears very unwell, a persistent cough, poor fluid intake, or hives that keep returning. Do not rely on an antihistamine alone when airway symptoms are present.

Ask whether the pattern fits an infection, a medicine reaction, or another trigger, and what to do if hives return. Share the exact timing of each exposure, the fever pattern, any swelling, and whether anyone else is ill.
