What should you know about cough expectorant?

An expectorant is a cough medicine intended for a chesty or productive cough. It can make thick mucus less sticky, allowing normal coughing to clear it from the airways. A dry, tickling cough may not improve because there is little mucus to move. Cough can occur with a common cold or acute bronchitis, but it can also accompany asthma, acid reflux, allergic rhinitis, or a longer-term airway problem. The presence of mucus does not identify one condition by itself.

Follow the product label and check the active ingredient before combining cold medicines, since products can overlap. Drink fluids if you can do so comfortably, avoid tobacco smoke and other irritants, and rest. Do not give an adult product to a child without checking the age instructions. A pharmacist can help you choose an appropriate product when you take regular medicines, are pregnant, or have a long-term condition. Do not suppress a productive cough simply to stop the sound unless a clinician advises it.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, or coughing blood. Arrange prompt medical assessment for chest pain, a high or persistent fever, wheezing that is new or worsening, dehydration, or a cough that keeps returning. A cough lasting two months needs an appointment so a clinician can consider causes such as chronic cough, asthma, reflux, or airway disease.

Ask whether your cough is productive, which ingredient fits your symptoms, and whether any of your medicines could be causing it. Mention the mucus colour and amount, breathlessness, fever, smoking or vaping exposure, and how long the cough has been present.
